Have you started your campaign yet? If not, it isn't too late. As they say, "knowing is half the battle." GETTING STARTED First, you'll need to choose what cause you find worthy. There are a number of opportunities in the optical world that you could quickly contact. Consider your local Lion's Club . Get involved there by providing a location for customers to drop off old glasses for the Lion's Club to pick up. Another worthy cause that is directly related to eyesight is the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation , which trains guide dogs to assist the blind. Another favorite of mine is Shared Vision International . It works locally and in third world countries such as Haiti to bring eyecare to areas that are less fortunate. Still another worthy cause is the Rhonda Eyes Alliance that also works with the less fortunate in Haiti. There are plenty of others. Several years back, I spoke with a business owner who did a drive to collect old glasses for the Lion's Club. He gave a discount on each sale if the customer brought in an old pair to donate. When the drive was over, he was not only able to donate several pairs of eyeglasses but also take a tax write off for the discount that he offered for each pair. In my store, we leave contribution boxes on each dispensing table. We don't charge for adjustments and minor repairs but encourage customers to leave a little something for the kids in the organization we sponsor. It never amounts to more than about $300 per year, but every little bit helps. CAUSES BEYOND EYECARE Your philanthropic choice does not always need to be vision related. There are bound to be several places in your local community that would like to work with you in a variety of ways. Locally, I contribute to two homeless shelters, a cancer survivor group, as well as a foundation at one of my local universities that works with special needs children. It doesn't take long to find a worthy cause in your neighborhood. I do, however, recommend that you make it a local cause versus
