It benefits the optician to learn as much as possible about the diagnostic process. Will opticians perform refractions? Maybe yes, maybe no. Many opticians currently refract under supervision or independently, and many never will. However, we know, without the shadow of a doubt, that knowledge and understanding of refraction makes better opticians. It allows for better communication with the patient and other eyecare professionals. It will bring heightened job satisfaction, reduce stress levels and increase profitability. Most of the opticianry schools include refraction in their curriculum. It will give our next generation opticians the right start for a bright future. But, what can you do if you currently don't have any refraction experience? The Opticians Association of America has sponsored refraction education for many years and is currently offering a 20-hour course, "Refraction for Opticians," through state associations. The program was created by a Mastermind Group of Opticians, commissioned by the Opticianry Summit, to research the importance of refraction for opticians today and in the future. The Masterminds found that refraction is part of the dispensing process. With prescriptions generated by electronic devices such as your iPhone, your computer or the kiosk in the mall, it is vital for opticians to understand and analyze such objective refractions to protect the patient's right to optimum vision. Professional Opticians of Florida first presented the course in 2015 with great success. I would encourage you to pursue refraction. It has changed my career. Who I am today and the position I am currently holding is the result of a decision I made to learn more so that I can understand and practice refraction. This is true for all the opticians I know who decided to learn about refraction. All of them have had lucrative careers. And so can you!
